Acousmo is a concert and sound art series focused on intentional listening. It offers a space for concentrated engagement with live sound and aims to counter the fast and superficial consumption of music. In this cycle, Acousmo introduces a new format: each evening begins with two solo performances by musicians or sound artists that are curated by the community. These are followed by an improvised set where both artists perform together.

Lindiwe Matshikiza

Lindiwe Matshikiza is a multidisciplinary artist from Johannesburg, currently based in Marseille. She has a background in theatre-making and her creative practice includes performance, research, writing and directing for stage and screen, as well as for more exploratory visual and sound art projects. Her projects are largely process-driven, intuitive, collaborative, and often take on more than one form over time. Sonically, she has a deep interest in the relationship between voice, intimacy, music, distance and archive, the research of which has led to several ongoing projects including Artist Mother in Africa [conversation series and upcoming publication], Other People’s Collections [travelling mixtapes and liner notes based on conversations with record collectors] and A *C of Voices [in partnership with Tracy September (TRA); deep listening sessions and guided meditations on voice and memory].

Lindiwe is also a community-taught filmmaker: Her directorial debut, One Take Grace, was a creative documentary made in collaboration with Mothiba Grace Bapela over ten years, for which they won the IDFA Award for Outstanding Artistic Contribution (2021), BlackStar Best Feature Documentary (2022), and the Grand Prize, International Feature at RIDM (2022).

tracy september

tracy september is a South African performing artist, sound practitioner, researcher and curator currently based in Zurich, Switzerland. Her first language is music. With influences of jazz and electronic experimentation, she has a particular passion for improvisation as an invitation to surrender attachment and trust the capacity of one’s intuition. Drawing from her Xhosa heritage, her performances serve as a medium for storytelling, archiving and ancestral custodianship. Crafting enigmatic and emotive sonic language, tracy’s sound and musical works are deeply rooted in ritual, community and communion, working around themes of memory, spirit and protest. Outside of her solo projects, tracy makes music for film, theatre and dance. She is a member of the band Black Pitch and a DJ playing under the pseudonym youngseptember.
